There are many concerns when a divorce is in motion and one of the
highest concerns on both parties is child support . Who pays? How is
child support calculated? How is it paid? Is there any recourse for non-
payment? In California, the law is very straight forward and direct. This
is one of the first issues that gets handled, because it is one of the most
important issues when a marriage is dissolved. California has guidelines based on the income of the parties and the amount of time they have with the children to determine what child support should be. In addition to basic child support the court will normally order continuation of insurance, a division of excess medical bills, and contributions to child care when needed. Support normally continues until the child is eighteen or if still in high school until the age of nineteen.
